Post-meeting tour: I would like to introduce you to a wonderful place in the Valais Alps (south west of the country): Derborence. This place weighs heavily in Alpine mythology since in the 18th century, the mountain collapsed on the inhabitants of the valley, reinforcing the idea that nature is always the strongest. This tragic event gave birth to one of the best-known works of Helvetian literature “Derborence” of C.-F. Ramuz tells the story of a young goat who miraculously escapes the landslide and describes his difficult return to normal life.
We will first go to Martigny (a town located at the crossroads of the valleys to travel to France and Italy) by bus. After a coffee, we will continue our tour on a traditional 1951 post bus to climb to Derborence on one of the most spectacular routes of the Alps.
On the spot, we will walk around the lake of Derborence which was formed at the time of the collapse, this (easy) pedestrian route is bordered by a primary forest in which the human activity is rigorously prohibited.
We will then taste typical local specialities and descend to the valley to enjoy a last glass of local white wine (in St-Pierre de Clages, Romanesque church of the eleventh century) before returning to Geneva by modern coach. It is after this spectacular day that I wil wish you farewell hoping that you had an unforgettable stay in Switzerland.
